Friendship Force of Baton Rouge
Incoming Journey – Oklahoma City (Las Vegas, & Grand Junction)
March 13-20, 2018
Lin Ashton was the Journey Coordinator.
The Baton Rouge Friendship Force club hosted an incoming domestic journey from Oklahoma City, and guests from Las Vegas, and Colorado. We began with a fun filled welcome party featuring jambalaya for dinner. There were crawfish races, and other games with prizes.
The next morning we began our downtown history tour at the Old Governor's mansion with spirited character actors from previous residents. Then on to the Old State Capital building, called The Castle, where we again saw spirits (a real ghost) from the past telling their stories of earlier days. The final stop of the day was the State Capital Museum with it's wonderful collection of our state's life, history, politics, music, and a full-size shrimp boat inside.
One beautiful day was spent at Vermillionville historic village, with it's authentic old structures, and depictions of the way of life for the Acadian people.
On Saturday we enjoyed the local St. Patrick's Day parade. It gave our guests an idea of what a Mardi Gras parade is like. One of the ambassadors from Oklahoma City was amazed to see a porta-potty on the floats. Another think that caught her eye was the huge amount of beads that were left on the ground after the parade!
Another day we went to St. Francisville to follow the Audubon Pilgrimage trail that included 4 historic plantations, 2 gardens, and the quaint town of St. Francisville. Lunch at The Frances included any many local favorites like gumbo and po-boys.
Our final day started out on a boat in the swamps. Our Cajun Pride Swamp Tour in LaPlace allowed us to see the local flora and fauna up close. Animals included raccoons, alligators, snakes, and turtles.
Our Farewell party was an authentic Crawfish Boil with all the fixings at Village Charmant clubhouse. The members of the Oklahoma City Friendship Force Club showed us many different uses for the bandanna.
What a great time we had sharing our culture with new friends!
